Today saw the release on Blu-ray and DVD of AFTER EARTH. Starring Jaden Smith (The Karate Kid) and two-time Academy Award nominated Will Smith (2006, Best Actor, The Pursuit of Happyness; 2001, Best Actor in a Leading Role, Ali), this action-adventure follows Kitai Raige (Jaden Smith) and his father Cypher (Will Smith), as they set out on a routine mission that crash lands them on a hostile planet Earth. Now, 1,000 years after Earth has been quarantined, everything on the planet has evolved to kill humans. Unable to contact home, and forced to battle exotic creatures and dangerous terrains, Kitai and Cypher must fight together to survive.

I've just shared my review of The Big Wedding which is due to hit the shelves on Monday. Starring Katherine Heigl, Amanda Seyfried, Diane Keaton, Susan Sarandon and Robert DeNiro, this comic film is about a modern family trying to cope with a wedding weekend that could turn into a full blown fiasco.

If you want a funny rom com to snuggle up under the duvet with your other half with on a cold autumnal evening, it's the perfect lightweight entertainment.

DVD review : The Big Wedding


After watching family movie Snowflake with the kids earlier in the week, I packed them off to bed and settled down with another film, The Big Wedding (but I couldn't help keep saying The Big Fat Greek Wedding !) that is more of a rom com and definitely aimed at grown-ups. 

The official blurb says : "With an all-star cast led by Robert De Niro, Katherine Heigl, Diane Keaton, Amanda Seyfried, Topher Grace, Susan Sarandon and Robin Williams, The Big Wedding is an uproarious romantic comedy about a charmingly modern family trying to survive a weekend wedding celebration that has the potential to become a full blown family fiasco!

To the amusement of their adult children and friends, long divorced couple Don and Ellie Griffin (De Niro and Keaton) are once again forced to play the happy couple for the sake of their adopted son's wedding after his ultra conservative biological mother unexpectedly decides to fly halfway across the world to attend. With all of the wedding guests looking on, the Griffins are hilariously forced to confront their past, present and future - and hopefully avoid killing each other in the process."

It kept reminding me of Meet The Fockers, not just because it also stars Robert De Niro in a similar role but because of the same irreverent tone and at time slightly slapstick sense of humour. It did make me laugh at times, but there were a few moments that also made me cringe slightly. Overall, it's an enjoyable film to watch when you're tired and want something light that won't tax your brain too much but there's nothing hugely original in it.

There's a new family movie in town ! Snowflake The White Gorilla was released on DVD and Blu-Ray at the start of the week and we were very pleased to receive a copy to review. We happily settled on the settee with our duvets and a big bowl of popcorn for a family movie session.

Snowflake is a unique white gorilla  who is captured from her homeland in Guinea, raised by a family - where she meets her loyal human friend Wendy - before ending up in Barcelona Zoo, where the other gorillas reject her because she looks different. Desperate to fit in, she breaks out of the zoo, along with her friend the red panda, and finds a witch in a nearby circus who will make her a potion to turn her black. The friends are in grave danger though, because a nasty man - very reminiscent of Cruella's henchmen in 101 Dalmatians - wants to snatch Snowflake, convinced that her fur can be used as an amulet to ward off bad luck.

As you'd expect from a family movie, there's a happy end. In the nick of time, Wendy manages to convince the gorillas that "different isn't bad, it's special" and that "it's what's on the inside that matters". Great life lessons for little viewers to take into the world at large. Even the villain gets what he deserves so all is right with the world !

It's a lovely feel-good movie that the kids really enjoyed. As a grown-up, there were a few things that slightly peeved me. The picture on the DVD case suggests that it is an animated movie but it is actually a film using real actors and computer-generated animals, which may be disappointing to some younger viewers. Secondly, the real life scenes seem really dated with washed out colours, but this may be done on purpose as the film is supposed to be set in the 1960's. (The real-life Snowflake was in Barcelona Zoo from 1966 to 2003, although I have no idea if she really was shunned by the other gorillas or not !). Thirdly, the film is dubbed from Spanish so there's a problem with lip-synching. Something I wouldn't mind too much if I was aware of it, but I didn't see any mention of the fact before we sat down to watch.

The kids didn't mind in the slightest though - they thought it was brilliant !
